The false promises of the Internet

Michael J. Fox has been guest starring on Boston Legal as a rich terminal cancer patient. There was a scene in tonight's episode where his girlfriend is up late at night on her PowerBook, desperately looking up information about cancer treatments.

The Internet makes us feel like we can find out anything, and isn't knowledge power? But, in the end, we're still powerless against so many things.

Well, the Internet can also help a layperson make the wrong decisions by questioning a professional's opinion. There are times when clients decide to research by googling the law, and they end up bringing up only the horror stories. It makes my life more difficult, because I have to convince them that the horror story deviates from the standard case.

I'm sure that happens in medicine, too, where patients look stuff up on the Internet and question doctors. (That sad thing is that my trust in doctors has waned in the last few years, especially when it comes to the frontiers of medical knowledge.)

Although, a couple of times, my doctor has actually given me a couple of alternatives and asked me to look them up on the Internet myself. I don't know whether to be pleased or to be alarmed. :)
