Reminds me of this filter I helped with recently: http://www.potpaz.org/pfpfilters.htm (Basically just clay pots with a few silver nanoparticles, but the processing gives them a pretty fine (largely single to sub-micron) porous structure and colloidal silver is a very effective biocide that turns out to be cheap and fairly easy to obtain)

biocide is such a great word. i had a pharmacist once who swore by colloidal silver as a viral sore throat fighter. both great links!
