Art in commercial products

I just went to the Legion of Honor museum's Art Deco exhibit, open through July 5. I highly recommend it. It's really cool and rather varied in style. I like how the art of the time was different and new, but also pleasing to the eye.

The thing I found most interesting was how, instead of listing an artist, several of the objects listed a company instead, along the lines of:

Statuette of female figure
Sears and Roebuck Co.
mixed media, 1927

I made up the details there, but you get the idea. :) I like the idea of having art and design in everyday products like outboard motors and radios and such. So many modern products have such boring design.

In completely unrelated news... a while back I wrote a post about obscenity laws, titled, "Will somebody PLEASE think of the fucking children!" Guess what? I was looking through my server logs, and to my horror I'm getting Google hits from people searching for "fucking children" and "fucking children photographs". I am officially disturbed. :\ I figure: At least I'm making it that much harder to find what they really want!

Japanese Balloon Bombs

Now here's something I didn't know: Back during World War II, the Japanese launched thousands of bomb-filled balloons toward the US, and many of them landed. One of them disrupted a power line that affected a nuclear power plant, where the untested safeguards kicked in and worked. One of them killed a woman and 5 children in Oregon. They found a balloon and played with it, and then it blew up. They are the only people killed on the American continent during that war. I never knew that anyone ever was!

This column talks about it to argue against excessive wartime censorship. (News about the balloons was censored until those deaths.) The bottom of that column has a few links to more information about the baloons.

Is "defenestration" an onomatopoeia?

Not really, but it is at the top of the list in Merriam Webster's 2004 Top Ten Favorite Words. Awesome! It's certainly my favorite word!
